...Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will
be open to you. Luke 11:9
The Seekers trace their roots back over forty years when several of our members formed a new Sunday School class which took the name of The Challengers. This class grew rapidly, so some of our members were then asked to form the Agape class. About fifteen years ago, Agape merged with yet another class, and this group took the present name of The Seekers.
Our members “seek” God’s will for our lives, individually and collectively. Sunday lessons include Bible study, book study, and topical studies led by class members and others in our church. Sometimes we have invited outside speakers who have taught us about Thomas Merton, C.S. Lewis, world religions, and personal Christian witness. We are an interactive class with whoever is leading, no matter what the subject.
A typical Sunday morning finds about 25 of us enjoying coffee, treats, and fellowship followed by an opening hymn, announcements, sharing of concerns and joys, and our lesson for the day.
Over the years, our class members have contributed to our church life by starting the Wednesday Night Dinner tradition, the taping of each Sunday’s sermon, and the formation of the Altar Guild. More recent projects have helped Wesley Manor, Portland Methodist Center, the Bishop’s School Kit Project, Habitat for Humanity, Harrisburg Mission Trip, Versailles Children’s Home, and many others. Often these are brought to our attention by class members.
The Seekers are a mixture of single and married folks who range in age from their 50’s to 80’s. What keeps us together is our feeling of community and the stimulating insights we discover each Sunday. In addition to our Sundays together, we have an annual Christmas party, a spring overnight retreat, a summer picnic, and occasional Sunday brunches.
The Seekers Class meets in Room 254. We welcome others whose hearts are as ours, in the spirit of John Wesley, to join us as we seek our Christian paths.
